Louisville, Ky. - Weather interuppted Saturday's football scrimmage at the University of Louisville, as the Cardinals reached the halfway point of spring practice.
The Cardinals started at 8:20 a.m. this morning and scrimmaged until almost 10:30 a.m. before a rain shower ended the day's festivities for head coach Charlie Strong.
Louisville practiced for an hour before rain hit the area, moving the team indoors. After about 15 minutes inside Strong took the team back outside for the last portion of the scrimmage.
The Cardinals ran over 115 plays in the scrimmage that put the team through various sitations, like red zone, third down, coming out of the end zone and short-yardage plays.
"I was pleased with what I saw out there," said Strong. "We were better on defense today and I thought we did some good things on offense. We are halfway through spring practice and we continue to learn. But overall, we made plays on both sides of the football."
The Cardinals rotated both quarterbacks in seniors Justin Burke and Adam Froman. Burke the first two series and the two rotated the rest of the day with Will Stein out with an ankle injury.
Both quarterbacks ran the new spread offense well, according to offensive coordinator Mike Sanford. He was pleased with the way both players ran the football and directed the offense.
Senior wide receiver Doug Beaumont, who has yet to reach the endzone in his career, reached paydirt a couple times on a reverse and on a pass reception.
The defense, which has been challenged all week by the coaching staff, came out and did a better job of making plays and offered much more resistance than last week. Senior Johnny Patrick recorded an interception in the endzone and red-shirt freshman Champ Lee also had one to stop a drive in the red zone.
Strong and Sanford both likes the progress of the offensive line and thinks they are firing off the football and playing physical. The running back trio of Bilal Powell, Jeremy Wright and Darius Ashley have shown that they will be one of the strengths of the team.
The team returns to the practice field on Monday at 4:00 p.m.
