
Softball Splits at Judy Garman Classic

FULLERTON, Calif. - - The University of Louisville softball team fell to New Mexico 6-5 in eight innings, but rebounded with a 3-0 win over Purdue late Friday night in the Judy Garman Classic.
In the game against New Mexico, the Cardinals took a 3-0 lead in the second. Alicja Wolny led off with a single, moved to third on groundouts by Chelsea Bemis and Colby Wherry and scored on Tori Collins' base hit. Jordan Trimble followed with a double and Kristin Austin walked to load the bases for Melissa Roth's two-run double.
New Mexico got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth when Katie Gilmore and Erin Brandow walked and Jordyn Bledsoe's RBI single scored pinch runner Shenise Cox.
The Lobos took advantage of five walks and two hits to score four runs in the top of the sixth. Jessica Garcia and Shaunte Duarte walked and pinch hitter Danielle Castro delivered a two-out, two-run triple to tie the game at 3-3. Cristin Anderson followed with a triple to give New Mexico a 4-3 lead. A bases-loaded walk scored Anderson to make the score 5-3.
The Cardinals put together a two-run, two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh. Vanessa James reached on a two-out infield single, and scored on Alicja Wolny's double to pull the Cards within a run. Bemis followed with an RBI single to send the game into extra innings tied at 5-5.
In the top of the eighth, New Mexico's Bledsoe was placed at second, due to the international tiebreaker rule. Kerry Hodgins' sacrifice bunt sent her to third and she was safe on a play at the plate when Jessica Lujan-Dresslar reached on a fielder's choice for the 6-5 win.
The Cards went down in order in the bottom of the eighth.
Kristen Wadwell (7-6) took the loss, allowing one unearned run and striking out four in 2.1 innings. Jennifer Esteban, James, Wolny and Trimble each had a pair of hits.
Kaela DeBroeck (5-6) got the win, holding Louisville scoreless in 1.1 innings. Anderson led the Lobos offensively with a 2 for 4 performance at the plate. The Lobos improve to 10-14 on the season.
The game against Purdue featured a pitcher's duel with Louisville's Kristen Wadwell scattering three hits and Purdue's Suzie Rzegocki limiting the Cards to two hits through five scoreless innings.
Louisville broke through with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. James got things started with a bunt single. Wolny followed with a base hit. Bemis' RBI single plated James and an error on the play sent Wolny home and Bemis to third. Trimble delivered an RBI single to make it a 3-0 game.
Wadwell (8-6) went the distance in the shutout, scattering four hits and striking out six.
Rzegocki (6-10) took the loss, giving up three runs, two earned, on six hits and striking out six in six innings. Aimee Gingerich was 2 for 3 for the Boilermakers.
Louisville (17-10) will face host Cal State Fullerton Saturday.
