The University of Louisville women's tennis team took advantage of the return of senior Jo-Ann Van Aerde's return from an injury by winning the doubles point and then taking all but one singles match as the Cardinals beat BIG EAST rival Cincinnati 6-1.
"It was a good conference win for us. All conference matches carry seeding weight for the BIG EAST Tournament," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. "I feel that with that win, we will keep ourselves seeded where we should be in the conference tournament."
Van Aerde paired with Kaysara Mandry to win 8-5 over Ksenia Slynko and Elise Woulfe at No. 2 doubles. Amelia Harris and Mandy Brown combined for a 8-2 win over Safiyya Ismail and Lindsey Lonergan at No. 1. Stefanie Villajuan and Louise Noe made it a Cardinal sweep with an 8-1 win over Abby Mayo and Caitlin O'Gara.
"It was a good day for our senior. Joey Van Aerde, to be back in the lineup. Her coming off surgery and being able to play good doubles was a big spark for us," said Beckham.
The Cardinals blew through the singles matches with Brown beating Ismail at No. 2 6-3, 6-0. Mandry came back over Lonergan 4-6, 6-4 (7) at No. 3 and Ashley Irvin took her match 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4. At No. 5, Gabrielle Duncan beat UC's Caitlin O'Gara 7-6 (4), 6-0 and Stefanie Villajuan won at No. 6 bover Abby Mayo, 6-2, 6-2.
U of L is now 8-5 and will head out west for spring break with matches against Arizona State (March 18) and BYU (March 19) in Tempe, Ariz.
