LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville freshman point guard Shoni Schimmel was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon. It is the second honor for Schimmel this season.
In the final game of the Duel in the Desert, Schimmel led the Cardinals in scoring with 22 points as Louisville defeated then-No. 21/RV Nebraska, 65-51. She made a career high-tying 10 shots from the field (16 attempts) and collected three rebounds, one assist and a steal. She leads the team in scoring and assists with 16.8 points and 5.6 assists per game.
Schimmel has notched four consecutive 20-point outings and has reached double-figures in each of the last 11 contests. She has also hit multiple threes in nine straight games for the Cardinals, who are having their best three-point shooting season (.376, tops in the BIG EAST) since 1989-90. Schimmel's 12-assist performance against UT Martin on Tuesday night fell one assist short of the Louisville freshman record.
