LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville football head coach Charlie Strong and senior quarterback Justin Burke met with reporters on Monday to preview Saturday's BIG EAST Conference home game against USF. The Cardinals and Bulls are scheduled to kick off at noon at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPNU.
In their last outing, the Cardinals snapped their 11-game BIG EAST road losing streak with an impressive 28-20 win over Syracuse in the Carrier Dome last Saturday. It was Louisville's first league win on the road since a 28-24 win over 15th-ranked Cincinnati in 2007.
Missing two of their top offensive players in Adam Froman and Bilal Powell, senior quarterback Justin Burke and redshirt freshman Jeremy Wright stepped up for the Cardinals. Burke was 13-of-25 for 143 yards and two scores, while Wright rushed 19 times for 98 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
For the third straight week, the defense limited the opposition to less than 300 yards of total offense. The Cardinals held Syracuse to 256 yards, with only 101 on the ground. Louisville also held the Orange to 155 yards passing, marking the third straight game that an opponent was held to below 200 yards through the air. Redshirt freshman Hakeem Smith led the Cardinals with a career-high 13 tackles, while sophomore Daniel Brown had six tackles, a sack that caused a fumble and two tackles for loss.
The Series - Louisville and USF
The Cardinals and Bulls meet for the eighth time, with USF leading the all-time series, 4-3. In last year's meeting, USF won, 34-22, in Tampa. Louisville has won all three meetings at home, while the Bulls have captured all four games in Tampa.
