LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville head coach Rick Pitino and freshman guard Elisha Justice met with the media Friday afternoon at the Yum! Center to preview Saturday's contest against Jackson State on Saturday, Nov. 20, at the KFC Yum! Center. Start time is set for 7:37 p.m. in the first game of the Global Sports Shootout.
The Cardinals (1-0) opened the new season and arena in style on Nov. 16, upsetting 16th-ranked Butler, 88-73. Rakeem Buckles led the charge with 17 points and 11 boards, while Terrence Jennings tallied 13 points and eight boards in the win. The Cardinals had three other players finish in double figures, giving Louisville five double-digit scorers for the first time since Dec. 19, 2009, when Louisville had six players with at least 10 points in a 102-75 win over Western Kentucky. Defensively, the Cardinals held the 2010 national runners-up, Butler, to only 35 percent shooting from the field.
Jackson State (0-3) is coming off a tough 63-49 loss against No. 17 Baylor on Nov. 18. The Tigers' leading scorer, Rod Melvin, finished the game with 22 points - six buckets from beyond the arc - and four assists.
Under the direction of Tevester Anderson, who's in his eighth season, Jackson State returns four starters from last year's 19-13 squad, which won the SWAC and reached the NIT. Four Tigers earned preseason all-SWAC first second team honors. The team is led by Jenirro Bush, who's averaging 12.3 points per game, and De'Suan Dixon, who's averaging 5.3 rebounds per contest.
The Series - Louisville vs. Jackson State
The Cardinals and Tigers will face each other for the third time in series history. In the last meeting, Louisville posted an 84-53 win over Jackson State in the second round of the Las Vegas Invitational, which was held at Freedom Hall. Earl Clark registered 20 points, 14 boards and seven assists in the win. The first meeting featured a 90-64 Louisville victory on Nov. 24, 1994, in the Great Alaska Shootout. In that game, DeJuan Wheat had 25 points, five rebounds and three steals. One of the key factors that contributed to the Cardinals' win was the defense forcing 29 turnovers, with 18 steals.
