LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville football head coach Charlie Strong and senior offensive lineman Josh Byrom met with reporters on Monday to preview Saturday's BIG EAST Conference road game at Pittsburgh. The Cardinals and Panthers are scheduled to kick off at noon at Heinz Field and the game will be televised by the BIG EAST Network. WHAS-TV in Louisville will also televise the game locally.
The Cardinals evened their record at 1-1 in the league and 4-3 overall with an impressive 26-0 win over Connecticut at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium last Saturday. It was the Cardinals' first BIG EAST shutout and the second blanking of an opponent this season. It's also the first time the Cardinals recorded a pair of shutouts in a season since the 2004 season when Louisville shut out Kentucky and North Carolina.
The Louisville defense completely shut down the Huskies, limiting UConn to just 195 yards of total offense and 108 yards on the ground. Louisville held Jordan Todman, the nation's third-leading rusher heading into the game, to just 80 yards -- 72 yards below his average. The Huskies had only 11 first downs and had the football for only 22:33 for the game.
Senior running back Bilal Powell recorded his fifth 100-yard game of the year, but more importantly, reached the 1,000-yard mark with 1,003 yards in only seven games and on just 142 carries. Senior Adam Froman threw a touchdown pass in the second quarter to record his sixth straight game with a touchdown pass; it was his ninth in the last four games. Senior Doug Beaumont caught seven passes for 53 yards.
The Series - Louisville and Pittsburgh
The Cardinals and Panthers are playing for the 14th time with Louisville leading the all-time series 7-6. However, the Cardinals have dropped the last two encounters in 2008 and 2009.
