
Volleyball Rolls Over SIU-E 3-0

Lecia Brown had 10 kills and five blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 25-16, 25-17, 25-15 win over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at the Ball State Active Ankle Challenge in Muncie Friday evening.
U of L evens its record at 2-2 and SIU-E falls to 0-6. The Cardinals hit a season high .391 with 10 blocks. SIU-E hit .071 and had six blocks. U of L got 14 kills and two blocks out of freshman Lola Arslanbekova. Newcomer Amanda Simmons had four kills on five swings for .800 hitting and added a block to her tally.
"We are looking for the best combination because we have the pieces and we have the right system in place and now we test it in a match situation," said Leonid Yelin.
The Cardinals flew out to a 13-3 lead early in the first set and used .333 hitting to keep the Cougars at arms length. U of L was led by Lola Arslanbekova's five kills and Lecia Brown's two blocks.
In the second set, U of L was able to use .429 hitting to build a 9-4 lead . SIU-Edwardsville got as close as four at 17-13 but Brown had two straight blocks and Anastasia Artemeva had three kills to open the gap. Gwen Rucker and Gosia Lech combined on a block for set point. U of L hit .429 to SIU-E's .077. At the break, U of L led blocking 8-4. Brown had eight kills in the second set alone. The Cougars stayed close early in the third set, trailing by just three at 13-10. U of L roared back with a 9-2 run to go up 22-12 and then sealed the match by scoring two of the last three points for the win.
The Cardinals play the early game tomorrow, facing IPFW at 10 a.m. and then play host Ball State at 7 p.m. in Worthen Arena.
