
Softball Opens Fall Season with Two Wins

The University of Louisville softball team opened the 2009 fall season with two wins, defeating Bellarmine 9-2 and Murray State 4-0 Saturday at the Louisville Fall Tournament.
In the game against Bellarmine, Colby Wherry went 3 for 3 with two RBI as the Cardinals powered out 13 hits en route to a 9-2 win.
The Knights jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Jordan Basham's two-run double drove in Mariya Kobayashi and Angel Zimmerman who led off the game with back-to-back walks.
The Cards answered in the third when Kristin Austin singled, stole second and scored on Melissa Roth's double. Wherry's RBI single plated Roth to tie the game at 2-2.
Louisville broke the game open with a four-run fourth which was sparked Brittany York's two-out three-run triple. Wherry's double scored York to give the Cards a 6-2 lead.
The Cardinals tacked on three more runs in the sixth when Christina Roesel and Kristin Austin delivered back-to-back singles, both runners came home when Chrisanna Roberts reached on an error. Alija Wolny's single scored Roberts for the 9-2 final.
Tori Collins got the win, holding the Knights scoreless on two hits with five strikeouts in 4.0 innings of relief. Kristen Wadwell gave up two earned runs on one hit and fanned six in 3.0 innings.
Casey Willard took the loss, allowing six earned runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings. Basham led the Knights, going 3 for 3 with two RBI.
Against Murray State, Roth and Jennifer Esteban were 2 for 2 as the Cards blanked Murray State 4-0.
The Cards struck early with a run in the first. Austin singled and came around to score on Chelsea Bemis' sacrifice fly.
Roth's RBI single in the third plated Jordan Trimble who had reached on an error to make it a 2-0 game.
The Cardinals extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth when Jennifer Esteban beat the throw on a bunt single and came home on Alicja Wolny's RBI double.
U of L tacked on another run in the sixth when Esteban delivered her second hit of the game and eventually scored on an error for the 4-0 final.
Kristen Wadwell got the win, giving up only one hit and striking out seven in 4.0 innings of relief. Tori Collins surrendered two hits and struck out one in 3.0 innings.
Kristen Broadway took the loss, giving up three runs, two earned on five hits and striking out one in 4.0 innings. Megan Glosser led the Racers offensively with two hits.
The Louisville Fall Tournament will continue Sunday when the Cardinals face Bellarmine at 11 a.m. and Morehead State at 1 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium.
