Louisville, Ky. - With the first double session practice looming on Wednesday, the University of Louisville football team went through a physical and demanding 2:15 minute practice on Tuesday afternoon.
The Cardinals finished their sixth practice of the summer and continue to work hard on various sitations, including all special teams phases. This afternoon, Jacques Caldwell got the first crack at returning kicks, while Preston Pace also rotated in as well.
Punter Cory Goettsche was consistent punting the football on Tuesday. He consistently had hang times of 5.0 seconds or better. He kicked perfect spirals and often times drove the punt returner backwards.
I love the progression of wide receiver Troy Pascley. For the first six days of practice, Pascley has run precise routes and made a number of difficult catches down the field. His route running often left him wide open down the field. Andrew Robinson sat out today's practice after getting a tooth pulled.
Wide receiver Scott Long practiced this afternoon after resting on Monday. He will likely practice the first session on Wednesday and sit out the afternoon.
Head coach Steve Kragthorpe ended practice with a goal-line drill. With the ball on the five yard-line, the offense had three plays to crack the goal line. In the brief scrimmage, the defense held its own, but the offense did score a few times. Defensive tackle L.D. Scott came up big on several plays at the goal, including drilling Victor Anderson in the backfield as soon as he touched the ball.Anderson later answered with a powerful touchdown run. Tight end Cameron Graham also scored a touchdown.
Cornerback Johnny Patrick showed why he is one of the top corners in the league. In one-on-one drills, Patrick and Long went head-to-head a number of times. He knocked away a couple of passes, including a diving deflection over the shoulder of Long in the end zone. Patrick had sure interceptions during the 7-on-7 and full scrimmages and twice the ball went right through his hands.
The team will practice at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday before coming back at 6:40 p.m. for the second session.
