Louisville, Ky. - - The Louisville football team returned to the practice field on Thursday for its ninth workout of the spring with a two-hour session in full pads at the Howard Schnellenberger Practice Facility. The Cardinals started outside for the first hour before the storms moved the Cardinals inside for the final 11 periods.
"I liked the work I saw out there today," Louisville head coach Steve Kragthorpe said following Thursday's workout. "I love how the guys are hitting and playing with great intensity and speed. The biggest thing I see is guys playing with the kind discipline that you need to play with, which comes from focus and mental energy rather than just trying to endure practice and get through it."
The Cardinals are nine workouts into a spring practice that is scheduled for 15 sessions and will conclude with Red-White Game on Friday, April 17, at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.
The Cardinals did full team work for the last couple periods and the hitting was some of the best this spring. Safety Daniel Covington put a huge hit on quarterback Justin Burke, who made a nice run for the first down.
Red-shirt freshman Darius Ashley continues his development with running backs Victor Anderson and Bilal Powell out due to injury. He bursted through the line and put a huge hit on Antwon Canady to get into the end zone. Covington also made a nice interception on a play later in the team period.
Red-shirt freshman Jacques Caldwell has been moved from wide receiver to cornerback. Defensive end L.D. Scott and Powell had surgery and will miss the rest of the spring, but will be ready for summer workouts.
The Cardinals will return to the practice field on Saturday afternoon in full pads with a 95-play scrimmage.
