KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The nationally ranked University of Louisville men's and women's track and field teams earned an NCAA Regional mark and eight top-ten finishes on day three of the Sea Ray Relays hosted by the University of Tennessee on Friday.
The meet was delayed three hours and 32 minutes due to severe thunderstorms in the Knoxville area, however; all scheduled events were completed with the exception of the men's invitational hammer throw, open high jump and open pole vault which were pushed back to Saturday.
"I was pleased with how we competed today given the delay," said U of L head coach Ron Mann. "I thought our athletes responded well and gave a solid effort."
Despite the stormy forecast, sophomore D'Ana McCarty led the efforts of the Cardinal women as she finished third overall in the discus with an NCAA Regional qualifying and personal best mark of 156-08 (47.76m). The Indianapolis, Ind. native has improved her distance in each meet this season and gave U of L their 13th regional bid and 22nd overall.
Senior Seidre Forde placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 41-02.50 (12.56m). It marked the third straight meet she has reached NCAA Regional status. Forde currently holds the sixth best mark on the NCAA descending order list.
Redshirt sophomore Kim Grieshaber finished third in the 5,000-meter run invitational with a time of 17:14.12, earning her first-ever BIG EAST qualifying mark.
On the men's side, sophomore Weston Banks led the way with a third place heave in the shot put of 52-09.25 (16.08m). Banks also finished fifth in open discus with a personal best throw of 163-10 (49.93m).
In the 1,500-meter run, senior Cory Thorne led a group of four runners with a BIG EAST qualifying and personal best time of 3:52.83 to finish eighth. It was the fifth fastest time in school history.
Freshman Luke Lovelace placed fifth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:44.97, setting a personal record and earning a BIG EAST qualifying mark.
The Cardinals continue the Sea Ray Relays on Saturday. Following this weekend's meet, the Cards will return to action on April 16-17 at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., and will also host the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational on April 18 at Cardinal Park.
