KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The nationally ranked University of Louisville men's and women's track and field teams improved two NCAA Regional marks, set a school record and earned seven top-five finishes on the final day of the Sea Ray Relays hosted by the University of Tennessee on Saturday.
"Overall, I was pleased with the results from this weekend," said U of L head coach Ron Mann. "We continue to improve each week and are starting to put it all together."
The Cardinal men were led by the performance of redshirt junior Steven Hnat who finished second in the invitational shot put with a school and personal best throw of 58-08.75 (17.90m). Hnat has broken his own record in each meet he has attempted the event this season. The latest attempt, his third, surpassed the record of 58-05.50 (17.89m) by the slimmest of margins but nonetheless was an improvement on the NCAA descending order list which gives him the 13th best mark in the nation.
Senior Andrew Hackney placed second in the open hammer throw with a toss of 189-04 (57.70m), earning a regional mark in the event for the second time this season.
Redshirt junior Tone Belt finished fourth in the invitational high jump as he cleared 6-08.75 (2.05m), while freshman Wesley Smith took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 23-06.25 (7.17m).
The distance medley relay team placed ninth as they clocked 10:16.83, the second fastest time in school history.
On the women's side, junior Jere' Summers set the tone in the shot put with a heave of 51-11.25 (15.83m) to finish third. The mark improved her position six notches to 13th on the NCAA performance list. Summers also placed ninth in the invitational discus after throwing 147-00 (44.81m).
Freshman Khadija Abdullah placed fifth in the shot put as she reached regional status for the fourth time with a toss of 49-09.75 (15.18m).
In the invitational discus, freshman Chinwe Okoro finished fifth with a distance of 154-09 (47.17m).
The Cards will return to action on April 16-17 at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., and will also host the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational on April 18 at Cardinal Park.
