LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville men's basketball head coach Rick Pitino met with members of the media on Tuesday at the Yum! Center to recap the Cards' 2008-09 season. The Cards (31-6) had their season end following a 64-52 loss to Michigan State in the Midwest Region final on March 29 at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis, Ind.
Louisville entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 seed overall after winning both the BIG EAST Conference regular season (16-2) and tournament championships, knocking off No. 18 Syracuse 76-66 to claim their first conference title in their fourth season competing in the BIG EAST. It was only the second No. 1 seed ever attained by the Cardinals. U of L went on to defeat No. 16 seeded Morehead State 74-54 and No. 9 seeded Siena 79-72 in Dayton, Ohio, and beat No. 12 seeded Arizona 103-64 in the Midwest Regional semifinal in Indianapolis.
The Cards reached their second consecutive Elite Eight and third in five seasons. Louisville attained their first ever Associated Press No. 1 ranking at the conclusion of the regular season, while also earning the No. 1 spot in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll.
