The University of Louisville lacrosse team is raising funds for a team trip abroad by sponsoring a raffle for a Kentucky Derby prize package.
Each lacrosse player selling is selling 20 tickets at $25 per ticket or five tickets for $100. The winner will receive a Kentucky Derby packages that includes two grandstand tickets for the Kentucky Derby which were donated by James Wood, two Southwest Airlines tickets to be used within the year and two nights at Coach Young's home, which she is donating for the weekend.
"In considering the challenges our student athletes would have to face in starting a Division I program, I wanted to do something special for them, said Coach Kellie Young. "An international trip - an opportunity combining competitive lacrosse, international travel and a chance to give back to another community - seems to most exciting choice. This venture is one many of our players would not have access to if it weren't for the involvement with our program. We are thrilled to be taking on this endeavor and look forward to exposing our student-athletes to the world beyond Louisville, Kentucky.
The team will travel overseas, although the exact destination still to be determined with Australia, Great Britain, Italy and Brazil being considered as they are countries with a rich tradition in lacrosse for women.
Coach Kellie Young wants the trip to be a balance of lacrosse play, cultural experience and giving back to a community and is targeted for the Summer of 2010.
The Cardinals will use a sports travel service that specializes in philanthropic sports tours. The company combines athletic competition with a required element of international community service such as working with Habitat for Humanity.
The raffle ends February 11th with the drawing being scheduled for February 14. Contact any lacrosse player or the lacrosse office at 502-852-4995.
