
Volleyball Flattens Mountaineers

Senior Justine Landi had a match-high ten kills and 10 digs for a double-double as the University of Louisville swept West Virginia 25-19, 25-17, 25-16 in BIG EAST volleyball action Saturday afternoon in Cardinal Arena.
U of L improves to 9-6 and 2-0 in the conference while WVU drops to 11-7 and 1-2 in the BIG EAST. U of L hit .196 for the match and outblocked WVU 12-6.5. The Cardinals notched six aces led by Lola Arslanbekova's two. Amanda Simmons recorded a match-high six blocks. Lecia Brown hit .385 with six kills and four blocks. West Virginia was led by Lauren Evans, who had seven kills.
"I was pleased about our block is traditionally good but we have to do better in positioning and timing and we made little changes in lineup and got a little bit bitter and I think it helped . We still have to focus and consistency on serve receive improves since begging of season. Still lot of work and build woinning mentality.
In the first set, U of L ran out to a 12-6 lead and never trailed. WVU managed a four point run late to come within four at 21-18 but U of L scored four consecutive points to take the set 25-19. In the second set, U of L built a 16-8 lead and WVU used both timeouts to try and stop the momentum but the Mountaineers were hitting .000 which hampered a comeback. The Cards got to game point on a Gwen Rucker kill and then a WVU hitting error gave U of L the 25-17 win.
In the final set, U of L had an eight point run early to go up 8-4 and never looked back. WVU got within four at 16-12 but was outscored 7-3 to give the Cardinals set and match.
The Cardinals play Pitt Sunday at 2 p.m. in Cardinal Arena.
