With four three-point field goals, junior Jerry Smith moved into ninth place all-time on Louisville's career three-point field goal list with 150, moving past Brian Kiser (1992-96). Smith also scored a season-best 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor and 4-of-5 from behind the arc. Smith's previous season-best was 16 points against Ohio on 12/7/08. It was the first time in seven games that Smith scored in double figures. Smith has now scored 800 points for his career.
The win over West Virginia today was the ninth in a row for the Cardinals and their fifth in a row at home since a loss to UNLV on 12/31/08.
Trailing 12-10 with 11:44 remaining in the first half, the Cardinals went on a 23-3 run over the next seven minutes to go ahead 35-13. During a four minute stretch in the first half (11:44 to 7:53), the Cardinals had connected on six straight field goals.
Louisville moved to 15-0 this season when shooting better than the opposition and out-scoring the opponents bench. Louisville out-shot West Virginia, 55.8 percent to 35.6. Louisville's bench also out-dueled WVU, 20-6.
The Cardinals entered today's game ranked eighth in the country in blocked shots at 6.5 bpg. In the win over West Virginia, the Cardinals blocked nine shots - the ninth time this season that the Cards' blocked seven or more shots in a game, including five of the last nine games.
Freshman Terrence Jennings reached a new career-high in just the first 12:07 of the game. Jennings hit his first four shots from the floor and 2-of-2 from the free throw line. For the game, Jennings scored 13 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the floor. Jennings' previous high was nine points versus Syracuse on 1/25/09.
The Cardinals shot 55.8 percent from the floor, the fifth time this season the Cardinals shot better than 50 percent from the field in a game. Over the past 10 years, Louisville is 85-7 when connecting on 50 percent or better from the floor.
Louisville is also 144-25 when holding its opponents to less than 70 points in a game over the past eight years, including 14-2 this season. Louisville held West Virginia to 35.6 percent shooting from the floor, the 14th team that the Cardinals held below their season shooting percentage. It was also the 12th opponent this season that the Cardinals held below 40 percent shooting from the floor.
Louisville committed a season-high 26 turnovers, which was the most since they had 19 versus Pittsburgh on 1/17.
