The Cardinals played in their first overtime game since a 76-69 loss to Pittsburgh in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament on 2/13/08. It was the first overtime win since an 82-71 win over West Virginia on 3/8/07 in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament. The Cardinals have won five of their last six overtime contests. Head coach Rick Pitino improved to 14-16 in his career in overtime games.
The Cardinals tied a season-low with nine turnovers in the game, which was the third time this season and the first since a win over South Alabama on 11/23/08 that the Cards' committed less than 10 miscues in a game. The Cardinals also recorded 21 assists , which marked the eighth time this season that Louisville recorded 19 or more assists in a game.
The Cardinals allowed the Fighting Irish to score 73 points, which was just the fourth team to do so all season and the first since Kentucky scored 71 on 1/4/09. The Cardinals are 105-5 over the last nine seasons when scoring over 80 points in a game, including 78-5 under Pitino and 6-0 this year.
Junior Earl Clark recorded his 17th career double-double and seventh this season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. It was Clark's seventh double-double in his last 13 contests. Clark has scored in double figures in 19 of his last 21 games dating back to last season and for the 42 time in his career.
With three three-point field goals, senior Terrence Williams moved into seventh-place on the school's all-time three-point field goals made list with 158, passing Marques Maybin (1997-01).
Williams also registered his 14th double-double and third this year with 24 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. It was Williams' second straight double-double after registering 10 points and 14 rebounds against Villanova on Saturday. Williams' 16 rebounds was the most since he recorded 14 versus Rutgers on 1/13/08.
Entering tonight's game, junior Jerry Smith missed his last eight three-point attempts, but connected on his first three attempts and was 3-of-4 for the game.
Coming off a 3-of-25 shooting performance from behind the arc against Villanova on Saturday, the Cardinals connected on 10-of-30 from behind the arc. Louisville hit nine or more three-point field goals for the seventh time this season.
The Cardinals blocked nine shots in the game against Notre Dame, which was the seventh time the Cardinals blocked seven or more shots in a game this season. It was the third time in four games that the Cardinals registered seven or more blocks in a game. The Cardinals entered the game ranked 11th in the country in blocks.
Freshman Terrence Jennings recorded a career-high six rebounds in the win over Notre Dame, which was the most since recording four against Lamar on 12/8/08. He also blocked three shots in the contest.
