LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville has signed a two-game deal to play Southern Mississippi in football beginning in 2009 at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.
The Cardinals and Golden Eagles, who have met 27 times on the gridiron, will play Oct. 10, 2009, in Louisville. The return contest is slated for Sept. 29, 2012, at Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg, Miss.
"We look forward to the addition of Southern Mississippi to our football schedule for next year," said Tom Jurich, Vice-President for Athletics at Louisville. "I think this series is great for the fans of both schools because of the close proximity between the two institutions. We enjoyed our rivalry with them and are excited about continuing it with this two-game deal."
This will be the first meeting between the schools since 2002 when the Cardinals won at Southern Miss, 20-17, in overtime. The Golden Eagles own an 18-8-1 record in the overall series.
Both schools were members of Conference USA from 1996-2004 before the Cardinals joined the BIG EAST Conference in 2005. The two schools combined to win seven C-USA titles during that span. Louisville won the league in 2000, 2001 and 2004, while USM were league champions in 1996,1997,1999 and 2003.
