Louisville, Ky. - Second-year head coach Steve Kragthorpe opened camp officially on Tuesday with a rather lengthy, but productive practice at the football complex.
The 2008 Cardinals were greeted by a couple hundred fans for the start of practice on the brand-new practice fields. New turf was installed after the end of spring practice and the fields are NFL-type practice fields.
New strength and conditioning coach Joe Kenn stretched the Cards' for the first time before the 24-period practice got underway.
"I was happy with the way the guys came out and worked," said Kragthorpe. "We had a good pace to practice and the intensity was what I wanted. Obviously, we have a lot to work out, but we have some time before we get going on August 31. I was pleased for the first day."
The defense, under Ron English, came out and played with intensity and made some plays. Johnny Patrick dropped a would-be interception, however, Agyei Williams made one.
Freshman Stephon Ball, who was slated to be at tight end, moved to wide receiver for the start of fall camp. Ryan Barnes, from Carmel, Ind., is having surgery on Wednesday and will most likely re-join the team in January.
Day 2 of camp will begin with an academic orientation for new players and a workout with coach Kenn, The team will hit the practice fields again at about 5:00 p.m.
