Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville's 2008-09 women's basketball non conference schedule will once again prepare the Cardinals for the tough BIG EAST slate. The Cardinals' non conference schedule features six teams that participated in postseason play last season. Overall the Cardinals will face 18 foes that participated in postseason play.
"We are really excited about the schedule we have put together for the 2008-09 season," said head coach Jeff Walz. "We are playing 18 teams that advanced to post season play last year and it should help us prepare for a run in the postseason. Our nonconference schedule consists of three teams- Xavier, Utah and Hartford who participated in the NCAA Tournament last year and MTSU, Kentucky, and Vermont all participated in the WNIT. I think the early road stint against solid competition will help us prepare for a grueling BIG EAST slate."
Louisville will play two exhibition games, including a double header with the men at Northern Kentucky on Nov. 8, to prepare for the season. The Cards will tip off the season at Tennessee Tech on Nov. 15.
"We are looking forward to seeing another great season for our fans," said Walz. "We appreciate all the fans that came out last season to give us our largest attendance average of over 6500. We hope to set another attendance record this year as well."
Louisville will play Austin Peay on Nov. 17 at the Kentucky International Convention Center as their home opener at 7:00 p.m. The Cardinals will then play five straight games on the road, starting with a game at Xavier on Nov. 22. During the Thanksgiving break the Cards will play a game at Utah then head to Reno for a tournament at the University of Nevada. They will wrap up the five road games at Middle Tennessee State on Dec. 3.
Louisville will wrap up nonconference play with a seven straight home games during the month of December. The Cards will return to Freedom Hall as they host Ball State on Dec. 7. NCAA participant Hartford will make an appearance in Freedom Hall on Dec. 10. The Cardinals will try to Pack the House once again on Dec. 14 as the host instate rival Kentucky on Dec. 14 at 2:00 p.m. in Freedom Hall.
The Cardinals will host Vermont on Dec. 21 before playing three straight tournament games to end the 2008 season. Louisville will host New Hampshire, Central Michigan and Morehead State in the Cardinal Classic Dec. 28-30.
The BIG EAST schedule has not been released yet but Louisville will host Cincinnati, Syracuse, Rutgers, Pittsburgh, DePaul, St. John's, Seton Hall and West Virginia in Freedom Hall. Louisville will travel to Connecticut, Notre Dame, Cincinnati, South Florida, Georgetown, Providence and Villanova.
U of L's complete schedule, including dates and times for the BIG EAST games, is expected in September.
