Women's Tennis Tops Marquette 5-2

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville women's tennis team posted a 5-2 win over BIG EAST opponent Marquette Saturday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cards improve to 8-4 on the season and 3-1 against league opponents. Marquette drops to 6-8 and 2-1 in the conference.

The Cardinals took the doubles point to start the match. Bianca Gorbea and Natalia Baez teamed to beat Maria Calbeto and Christina Ruiz 8-2 at the top seed while Jo-Ann Van Aerde and Lindsey Jones defeated Maggie Wilson and Shannon Brown 8-3 at the three-spot. Marquette's Rachel Hush and Erin Watkins posted an 8-4 win over Robyn White and Olivia Marshall at No. 2.

In singles action, U of L picked up points at Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5. Gorbea topped Calbeto 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2. Baez defeated Hush 6-3, 7-5 at No. 3. White registered a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Robin Metzler at the four-spot and Van Aerde beat Wilson 6-0, 4-6, 6-0 at No. 5.

Marquette's wins came at Nos. 1 and 6 as Watkins outlasted Jones 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6) at the top seed and Brown topped Marshall 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.

Louisville (8-4) will play host to Wichita State on March 10 at 11 a.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
