The University of Louisville women's tennis team won the doubles point and four of the singles matches to beat visiting Indiana State 5-2 Saturday night at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"This was a very good team that we just beat," said U of L:head coach Mark Beckham. "They were a Top 50 preseason team but had some injuries early and lost a few matches. The team we beat tonight was Indiana State back at full strength and a legitimate national level ranked team."
The No. 1 team of Bianca Gorbea and Natalia Baez fell 8-7 to Jennifer Migan and Joanne Schickerling but got help from their teammates. The No. 2 pair of Lauren Imre and Robyn White topped Valeria Petrovych and Marie Caujolle 8-6 and Lindsey Jones and Jo-Anne Van Aerde paired to beat Fadzai Masiyazi and Sarah Meghoufel at No. 3 for the point.
Jones scored a point at No. 2 with a 6-4, 7-4 win over Meghoufel with Gorbea handling Schickerling 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3. At No. 4, Natalia Baez rolled 6-1, 6-4 over Petrovych. Van Aerde added an insurance point with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Masiyazi.
The No. 50 ranked Cardinals move to 7-4 for the year.
"Our indoor season is now over," said Beckham. "I feel we did well in our indoor season and now we are ready to have the girls carry the momentum over to the outdoor season."
