Angel McCoughtry scored 21 points, including 10 straight during a run in the second half, to lead No. 13 Louisville past Ball State 82-51 Sunday. Louisville played without starting point guard Deseree' Byrd, who went to a hospital Sunday morning after experiencing a headache and fever.
Candyce Bingham chipped in 15 points and eight rebounds, while Keshia Hines had 10 points and nine rebounds for the Cardinals.
"It's been interesting year," Walz said. "We went from a year to not having a kid not have a hang nail all year, everybody made it through all year healthy. Now, it's been one after another but what I am excited about is our freshmen are starting to understand that they can't play like freshmen."
Louisville (7-1) led 33-31 at halftime but took control with a 19-4 run early in the second half. McCoughtry and Bingham did most of the scoring, combining for 17 points during the burst for a 54-37 lead with 14 minutes left.
Stephen didn't start but filled in for Byrd at the point and finished with five points, nine assists and two steals. She only had three turnovers.
U of L hit just 28 of 70 form the field but outrebounded Ball State 57-23. Freshman Gwen Rucker, who just finished her volleyball season Friday, played 15 minutes and finished with four points and five rebounds.
Emily Maggert led Ball State (3-3) with 15 points and Porchia Greene added 14.
