
Volleyball Beats WVU for Sixth Straight Win

Jana Matiasovska had 11 kills to lead the University of Louisville to a 25-21, 26-24, 25-20 sweep of West Virginia in BIG EAST volleyball action Sunday evening in Morgantown.
The Cardinals improve to 14-10 and move to 10-3 in the BIG EAST with one conference match left on the slate. The Mountaineers falls to 7-19 and remain winless in the league at 0-12.
"We are gaining confidence and hopefully can keep this momentum up going into the last weekend of the season and on to the BIG EAST," said Leonid Yelin, U of L head coach.
The Cardinals hit .145 to WVU's .074 with U of L acing the Mountaineers five times. Lecia Brown led all blockers with five as the Cardinals outblocked WVU 9-5. Justine Landi joined Matiasovska in double digit kills, when she had 10 kills, 23 assists and eight digs. Brown added sevens kills to the Cardinal effort. WVU was led by Lisa Hough six kills.
U of L used .370 hitting to keep the hardcharging Mountaineers at bay. The teams were tied at 16 but the Cardinals managed to built a slim lead at 22-19. Aces by Kristie Wetterer and Gosia Lech were part of the move to set point at 24-21 and a kill by Matiasovska gave the Cardinals the win.
In the second set, the two teams traded points and the Cardinals did not go ahead until the final two points. In fact, the Mountaineers got to set point first at 24-23 but Matiasovska's kill tied at 24. A hitting error by Abby Norman gave the Cardinals set point and a kill freshman Gwen Rucker ended WVU's rally.
After the break, WVU battled to a three point lead at 16-13 and the Cardinals responded with five straight points to take the lead for good at 17-16.
The Cardinals final BIG EAST match up is against Rutgers, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. in Cardinal Arena.
