Tatyana Kolesnikova had 10 kills and a block to lead the University of Louisville to a 25-8, 25-13, 25-15 sweep of visiting Rutgers in BIG EAST Volleyball action Saturday afternoon in Cardinal Arena.
The Cardinals extended their winning streak to seven straight. The win ensures the Cardinals can finish no worse than third in the BIG EAST as the league's regular season ended. Louisville improves to 15-10 overall and 11-3 in the conference. Rutgers falls to 2-21 and 1-12 in BIG EAST play.
"We have grabbed the momentum and hopefully it will carry into the conference tournament next week in Pittsburgh," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin.
The Cardinals came out hot and steamrolled the Scarlet Knights 25-8. The Cardinals scored five of Rutgers eight points, three on service errors. U of L hit .560 led by Jana Matiasovska's four kills. The set marked the return of Anastasia Artemeva, who has missed the last month with a stress fracture in her foot. She had a kill.
The Cardinals used a 10-1 run in the second set to go up 19-7. Rutgers was able to score three straight to get to 21-12 but were outscored 4-1 before falling 25-13. The Cardinals were led by Matiasovska's four kills. The Cardinals, who lead the BIG EAST in blocking, had five roofs in the second set.
Rutgers saved its best hitting for the final set but fell behind early. They would come no closer than seven at 17-10 when Artemeva had a service error. The Cardinals continued to pull away, powered by .542 and the Knights had no answer.
