Louisville Head Coach, Rick Pitino
"This was an excellent exhibition for us, it told us exactly where we are and what we need to work on. Georgetown deserves a great deal of credit. We did a much better job tonight and you all thought we played so good the other night, but when I watched the film it was the worst performance of any team has played in the red-white scrimmage. That is from a fundamental stand point, it was terrible. Tonight we did some better things but what we didn't do is we get them to shoot a low percentage, stop them and give them a second shot. Their starting back court had 18 rebounds in the game and our back court didn't and that's the first thing. The flip side is we go down execute, get fouled, and then we don't make the free throws. So those are two glaring things. It would have been a much different game for us if we would have done those two fundamental things of making sure we blocked out and the guards have to rebound. It's our guards, when they're playing zone and the three guys get in the triangle the guards have to come back right below the elbow and rebound the ball and they didn't do a good job. Edgar Sosa played the whole game without a rebound, Reggie Delk played the whole game without a rebound and their guards are getting over 20 rebounds from the one two three spots. So very simple idea, but you have to give Georgetown a world of credit. They're more advanced but we have much more talent then they do. They are much more advanced then us from an execution stand point because we've have to spend so much time developing these freshman because they have to play a lot. Just so you understand the freshman are not our problem the veterans aren't playing up to their potential. It takes a lot of time, but this is much better than the other night."
(On early Defense) "We just kept giving them second shots. Then we were out of position because we were giving second shots. When our guards extend pressure in the zone and the shots taken the rule is they have to pitch back into the paint and they're not. They're staying above the top of the key. That's suicide because jump shots against the zone we got the shots we wanted from them but jump shots come off the rim 10-12 feet and go over the big guys head guards have to get back in there and rebound."
(On Earl's Performance) "They played real well I don't think from and individual stand point anybody played real well. If you pick up a stat sheet you would have thought Samardo (Samuels) played well, but I thought he was the worst on the team tonight. I mean he's got guys five inches smaller than him bringing the ball down and cant get an and one against much smaller than him. You've got to get the and one. Those fouls aren't hard. How can you score against the BIG EAST guys if you can't get an and one against guys five inches smaller. Twenty points is meaningless. We didn't play real well but I haven't had one team play real well around this time of the year, but I don't get too discouraged."
