Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville will play host to the 2007 BIG EAST Men's and Women's Golf Championships in Louisville, Ky., on April 22-25. The three-day event will take place at two locations. The men's teams will compete at the par 72, 7,036 yard Cardinal Club, in Simpsonville, Ky., while the women's teams will play at the par 72, 6,067 yard Oxmoor Country Club. Each day of the championship will begin at 8 a.m. and will end at approximately 2:15 p.m. The Louisville women enter the event in the hopes of defending its 2006 championship titles.
Louisville junior Derek Fathauer and senior Adrienne White each won medalist honors last season at the men's and women's golf championships, respectively. This season each golfer will compete on their home course and will look to defend their respective titles. In addition, both golfers set three-round championship records a season ago. Fathauer posted a total of 202, while White shot a 216 over three rounds.
The men's team, under the direction of head coach Mark Crabtree is enjoying its best season in school history. The Cardinals are only one of two schools in the nation with six tournament wins. The Cardinals are ranked No. 15 in the recent GolfStat, the highest ranking in school history.
"I'm so proud of what these players have done to this point," said head men's coach Mark Crabtree. "We are coming off the biggest wins in school history in Columbus. We know this weekend will be huge for our program. We had a chance to win the BIG EAST last season, but fell to Notre Dame in a playoff. We need to close it out this season."
Louisville and Notre Dame both shot 22-under par, but the Fighting Irish edged out the Cardinals in a playoff.
The Cardinals head into the tournament coming off their biggest win in school history at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate. Playing against a strong Big Ten field, the Cardinals won the weather-shortened event by nine strokes over Michigan State.
Fathauer is ranked 21st in the country and has won two tournaments this season and was second at the Kepler Intercollegiate. He leads the team with a 72.03 stroke average.
The women's team, under the direction of head coach Kelly Rothberg, finished Top Five in eight of the 10 tournaments, making this season the best in school history. The Cardinals are currently ranked 34th by Golfstat this season.
"I am really proud of what this team has accomplished so far this season," said Rothberg. "We really came on at the end of the season last year and we wanted to capture that momentum and continue it into this season. We have done that so far but we have a lot of goals left to accomplish and a win in the BIG EAST Tournament will go a long way to achieving those goals."
The Cardinals won last year's championship by a 21-stroke margin. Louisville returned all five players from last season. White enters the tournament ranked 65th by Golfstat. She leads the team with a 74.8 stroke average. White has one win this season along with six Top 10 finishes. Sophomore Cindy LaCrosse is second on the team with a 75.8 stroke average. She has one win this season along with three Top 10 finishes.
