The University of Louisville women's tennis team took the doubles point and then four of six singles matches to beat Kansas 5-2 Sunday evening in Lawrence, Kan.
"We played well, probably the best we have played all year," said U of L coach Greg Davis. "It is difficult to beat at Big 12 team on the road in what was our first outdoor match. I think that speaks volumes on our team's effort."
U of L took the doubles point when No. 2 Natalia Baez and Bianca Gorbea powered to an 8-2 win. Jo-Ann Van Aerde paired with Natalie Laszkowski beat Kunigunda Dorn and Stephanie Smith 8-4 to clinch the point.
"Winning the doubles point was big," said Davis.
In singles, Gorbea struck first with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Yuliana Svistum at No. 4. Van Aerde finished next with a three set win over Smith, winning 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 to push the score to 4-0. Louisville won No. 6 singles by default. Lauren Imre clinched her match over Dorn in a three setter, dropping the first 6-2 but coming back to win 7-5 and 6-1.
"We had great performances in singles highlighted by Lauren Imre's three-set win at No. 1," said Davis. "It was a good win for us."
