
Volleyball Falls to No. 25 Cal Poly

Tatyana Kolesnikova had 14 kills, two aces and four blocks but it was not enough as the No. 20-ranked University of Louisville fell 3-2 to No. 25 ranked Cal Poly in the final match of the Ameritas Players Challenge in Lincoln, Nebraska.
U of L falls to 5-4 with the 20-30, 30-20, 22-30, 30-27, 13-15 loss while Cal Poly improves to 6-3.
"Cal Poly was able to grab the momentum when they could and their scrambling defense kept them in it." said Yelin. "As I have said, playing tough opponents this early in the season shows us our weaknesses and gives us time to address them before conference play begins."
Cal Poly was led by Kylie Atherstone's 22 kills and five blocks. Alicia Waller added 16 kills, and ace and two blocks in the effort. U of L had five players in double figure kills with Stephanie Marsh and Samantha Dabbs each adding 10. Jana Matiasovska added 15 and Ana Yartseva Stewart chipped in 12.
In the first game, U of L took its only lead at 6-5.while The Cards scrambled to stay close, the Mustangs slowly pulled away after a 5-1 run that took them to 24-17 and forced U of L into a timeout. But Cal Poly surged and double-blocked Jana Matiasovska to get to game point. A Samantha Dabbs tip delayed the end but a missed serve by Matiasovska gave the game to the Mustangs. Cal Poly hit. 279 to U of L's .136. U of L was led by Tatyana Kolesnikova's four kills. Cal Poly was paced by Ashley Bertoni's five kills.
U of L changed the momentum when they ran out to a 16-7 lead in the second set. The Mustangs had a short-lived 7-1 run that brought them to their closest margin of three at 17-4 which compelled Yelin to call timeout. U of L came out of the break and went on an 11-3 run to put the game out of reach. Matiasovska recovered to notch four kills, two aces and two blocks. Cal Poly hit .000 for the game to U of L's .233.
In the third game, U of L had a slim lead at 6-5 before Cal Poly ran off five unanswered points powered by a pair of Caitlin Suttich aces. U of L managed to tie at 16 on a pair of points by Matiasovska. Trailing by just one, U of L was rocked by another pair of Suttich aces that were a part of a 6-1 run that took the Mustangs to 25-19. U of L would score just two more points as a kill by Atherstone game Cal Poly the 2-1 game edge.
