Louisville, Ky. - Assistant SID Rocco Gasparro provides an overview each day of football practice
The team went back to work Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. under the intense presence of the sun. It was one of the hottest and most humid days of the summer, but the weather, doesn't get in the way of preparation. Despite the extreme heat, the team worked out for almost three hours.
Coaches like to work out in the heat, but head coach Bobby Petrino is very conscious of hydrating the players and giving them a few breaks throughout the practice. The players usually receive a break about an hour into practice or after period 13.
Sunday's practice was pretty heated as the Cardinals worked out in shoulder pads and helmets for the first time. Michael Bush and Kolby Smith looked to be running well as did George Sripling and Sergio Spencer.
The defense looks to be a much-improved unit with a lot of depth and talented players. Deon Palmer made a couple nice plays at safety and Rod Council and William Gay are two experienced corners.
The practice concluded around 12:45 p.m. and not a minute too soon. You could tell the team couldn't wait to get inside. About 25 players jumped into the cold tub which proably fits just 12 comfortably. It was definitely the place to be.
At 4 p.m., the offense met and watched the film, while the defense lifted weights and then the two units switched. The offense lifted, while the defense met.
Dinner will be at 6:15 p.m. and I'm sure the players are looking forward to that.
Monday's practice, the last open for the rest of the season, has been moved to 9:00 a.m. to avoid a little of the heat.
