Louisville, Ky. - After working out just once on Friday, the Cardinals returned to two-a-day practices on Saturday morning at the football complex. Under sunny skies and one of the coolest days of summer camp, the Cardinals had two of their better practices of the season.
While most teams would've folded under the heat and the intensity of practice, the Cardinals seemed fresh, which is a credit to Jason Veltkamp and the strength and conditioning staff. They did a great job with the players all summer and a lot of them are in the best shape of their careers.
The Cardinals worked out for about two hours in the morning. The team seemed to have an extra bounce in their step, which is probably due to the fact that they didn't practice Friday afternoon.
It looks like Chris Vaughn has really emerged as one of the players to watch. He's physical like a Montrell Jones and is willing to make all the tough catches. He's a tremendous athlete and one of the players to watch this fall.
The Cards came out and worked just over an hour and half in the afternoon, closing practice with the two-minute drill and watching Art Carmody knock field goals through the uprights.
After practice, the vets had to run six 55-yard sprints and the players were having contests and jawing back and forth -- having a little fun. Everyone ran hard and no one had to do extras, which the coaches like to sneak in a couple extras from time to time.
Sunday is sort of an off-day for the guys. Breakfast is at 8:00 a.m. and the team will have meetings and probably condition, but no practice, which I think everyone needs at this point after the first full week.
Practice resumes again on Monday with a pair of practices.
