LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Devon Smith, an assistant basketball coach for the past two years at Oakland University and a former player at Ohio State, has joined University of Louisville Coach Rick Pitino's basketball staff as Director of Basketball Operations.
"Devon is a tireless worker who comes highly recommended by a number of outstanding coaches," said Pitino. "He was an overachiever as a player at Ohio State and will work around the clock for the Cardinal Program. We're excited to have him as a part of our staff."
As an assistant coach at Oakland, Smith aided the Rochester, Mich. school in winning the 2005 Mid-Continent Tournament Championship and in earning an NCAA Tournament opening round victory that season.
Prior to joining the Oakland staff, Smith served as administrative assistant at Ohio State, where he earned his degree in communications in 2000. He was a member of the Buckeyes' 1999 Final Four squad which posted a 27-9 record and Ohio State's 2000 Big 10 Championship unit which recorded a 23-7 record.
He has served as an assistant coach at St. Peter's College in Jersey City, N.J. in 2001-02 and as a basketball analyst for Fox Sports Net (2001) and ESPN Regional (2004). He also worked several years at the highly acclaimed Five Star Basketball Camp under Howard Garfinkel.
As a player in his final prep season at Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy, Smith helped his 1994-95 team produce a 25-4 record.
