
Softball Set to Open BIG EAST Conference Play

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The No. 20-ranked University of Louisville softball team opens BIG EAST play this weekend when it hosts St. John's (19-13, 2-2)) in a doubleheader Friday at 4 p.m., and Seton Hall (16-16, 0-4) in a Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at Ulmer Stadium.
The Cards enter the weekend with a 20-4 overall record. The Cards are led offensively by junior shortstop Courtney Moore's .389 batting average, 21 runs scored, 10 doubles, four home runs and 18 RBI. Senior catcher Lacy Wood follows with a .375 average, nine doubles and 18 RBI.
Junior RHP Catherine Bishop (12-2) carries a league-best 0.67 ERA, with 89 strikeouts in 94 innings and is holding opponents to a .129 batting average. Sophomore Kady Garrick (5-1) has a 1.91 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 36 innings and is holding opponents to a .197 batting average.
U of L broke a two-game losing streak with a 6-0 win over host Eastern Kentucky Wednesday, March 29. The Cards had 11 hits in the game and were led offensively by senior Michelle Vasquez who went 4 for 4 with two home runs and four RBI. Junior Courtney Moore went 3 for 4 with a home run and three runs inthe game. Junior Catherine Bishop improved to 12-2 and notched her sixth shutout of the season.
St. John's Series record: First meeting
The Red Storm enters the weekend with a 19-13 record and a 2-2 mark in the the BIG EAST. Friday's matchup will pit the top hitter in the league, St. John's freshman Lauren Lupinetti (.456 batting average and 33 RBI) against the top pitcher - Louisville's Catherine Bishop (0.67 ERA, .129 opposing batting average). In the Circle, St. John's Kimberly Lerch (6-4) carries a 2.35 ERA with 44 strikeouts in 80.1 innings.
Seton Hall Series record: First meeting
The Pirates enter the weekend with a 16-16 overall record (0-4 BIG EAST). Seton Hall senior Katie Pierce is tied with Louisville's Courtney Moore offensively with a .389 average. Pierce leads the team with 29 RBI, 26 runs and five home runs. Jessica Jones (3-7) carries a 2.72 ERA with 64 strikeouts in 77.1 innings of work. Kim Schweitzer (7-6) has a 3.71 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 68.0 innings.
