The No. 75 ranked University of Louisville women's tennis team swept visiting Southern Miss 7-0 and moved the Cardinal record to 9-1 Sunday night at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"We played well against a well-coached, scrappy Southern Miss team," said Greg Davis. "I couldn't ask for any more from my team than what they gave me. They are maturing each match. We have a young team with three freshmen, and two sophomores in the top six. They are playingwell and competing at the highest level."
The Cardinals took the doubles point by winning two matches. At No. 1, Maria Klokotzky paired with Robyn White and handled USM's Sherry Price 8-2. At No. 3, Suzanna Gracanin and Natalie Laszkowski had the easiest time of it with a 8-1 win over Natalia Parrado and Courtney Ulrich.
The Cardinals then ran through the singles with relative ease. At No. 1, Klokotzky held on to win after taking the first set 6-1, her opponent Sherry Pride, put up a battle until falling 7-6 (5). White handled Kammerer 6-1, 6-2 but Gorbea took three sets to beat Ali Blackett 5-7, 6-1, 10-8. Gracanin and Laszkowski won at No. 4 and 5 respectively. Natalia Baez wrapped up the singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Ulrich at No. 6.
The Cardinals are idle until next weekend when Kansas and Wright State visit next weekend.
"We have Kansas, a Big 12 opponent, next Saturday and we will have our hands full," said Davis.
