Syracuse, NY - The Louisville women's basketball team scored its first BIG EAST Conference win Tuesday evening with a 90-73 win over Syracuse in the Carrier Dome. Four Cardinals scored in double figures with Missy Taylor leading the way with a season-high 20 points. Connie Neal knocked down a career-high six three-pointers for 18 points and Jazz Covington added 16 points while Katie Olson chipped in 10. Tracy Harbut led the Orange with 24 points.
"It was a good win for us tonight," said head coach Tom Collen. "Anytime you can get a win on the road in the BIG EAST its a good win. I never thought that we would score 90 points but then I never thought we would give up 73 points either. I thought we did a better job on defense in the second half, especially against Harbut and that was the difference in the game."
The Cardinals started the second half with back-to-back three-pointers by Olson and Taylor to go up 51-41. The Orange stayed close and cut the lead to nine with back-to-back three-pointers by Ashley McMillen with 16:38 remaining in the half. Louisville then went on a 9-2 run to go up 68-57 with 12:55 remaining and never trailed. The Cardinals finished the game with a season-high 12 three-pointers.
Louisville finished the game shooting 52.5 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from the three-point line. Syracuse shot 48.1 percent from the field and 63.6 percent from the three-point line. Louisville held a 33-28 rebounding edge.
The Cardinals will open up BIG EAST play at home against Villanova on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 1:00 p.m. in Freedom Hall.
