- The Cardinals are making their third appearance in a New Year's Day Bowl and the first since 1991 against Alabama in the Fiesta Bowl. Louisville is making is eighth straight bowl appearance.
- The Cardinals scored 521 points on the season, marking the second time in school history that U of L scored more than 500 points in a season. The Cards' scored a school best 597 points in 2004.
- Red-shirt freshman Hunter Cantwell recorded his first career three touchdown game. He completed 15-of-37 passes for 216 yards , three touchdowns and three interceptions.
- Red-shirt freshman wide receiver Mario Urrutia produced his fifth game this season with over 90 receiving yards. He had six catches for 95 yards today.
- Louisville's 343 offensive yards were over 100 yards more than Virginia Tech, No. 1 nationally in total defense, allowed on an average basis. It was also over 150 fewer yards than an average U of L offensive performance.
- Sophomore tight end Gary Barnidge recorded his sixth career touchdown reception and the second this season.
- Louisville opened the game with a 13-play, 82-yard scoring drive, which marked the sixth time this season that the Cardinals opened the game by scoring a touchdown.
- Louisville scored 14 points in the first quarter for the fifth time this season. It was the first time that Virginia Tech allowed 14 points in the open stanza all season.
- Senior offensive tackle Travis Leffew started his school record 50th straight game for the Cardinals, while senior offensive guard Jason Spitz started his 37th straight contest.
- Senior wide receiver Joshua Tinch caught a touchdown pass in the first quarter to extend his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 28.
- Sophomore placekicker Art Carmody made his 13th straight field goal attempt, a 35-yarder in the second quarter. He's 14-of-16 this season, which ties him with Nate Smith (2003) for the second-most field goals made in a season.
