CINCINNATI, Ohio - In the final non-conference match of the season, Xavier defeated the University of Louisville 3-1 in women's soccer on Sunday.
"We have to learn to bring the same intensity and effort for 90 minutes against every opponent, be cause today we didn't," said a frustrated Karen Ferguson.
"You have to credit Xavier for playing inspired and motivated, but I would have liked to see the result had we shown up."
The Musketeers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute, when Maggie O'Neal found Angie Scarlato with a cross.
After Xavier took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at half, the Cards (6-2-0, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) evened things up ten minutes into the second half when freshman Mallory Lampson scored her second goal of the season on a penalty kick. The kick was awarded after a handball in the box by XU.
The game winner came just under ten minutes later in the 65th minute when Melissa Zimmerman intercepted an attempted pass from Cardinal keeper Deana Waintraub and scored making it 2-1.
Shannon Chambers collected a deflection off a U of L defender in the 75th minute for an insurance goal.
Many of the numbers on the scoresheet were even, outside of the final score with U of L holding a 14-13 edge in shots and 6-5 in shots on goal.
Monique Gjini had five shots to pace Louisville. Shannon Smyth had two and seven others each had one shot.
The Cardinals had allowed just two goals in the previous seven matches this season.
After opening BIG EAST play with a 1-0 win over Cincinnati last week, the Cards will next travel to Chicago for a match against DePaul on Friday at 4:00 p.m. before opening the conference home slate with the defending national champions Notre Dame at 1:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park.
