LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated visiting Tennessee Tech 7-0 and Austin Peay 7-0 Sunday in a doubleheader at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cards extend their home win streak to 36.
Louisville opened the Tennessee Tech match with a doubles sweep as the No. 53-ranked team of Jakob Gustafsson and Jeremy Clark defeated Shunsuke Shimizu and Javier Saab 8-4 at the top seed. No. 50 Mark Kennedy and Jhonny Berrido beat Michele Panzeri and Borja Zarco 8-0 at No. 2. The Cards' Tony Teufel and Stefan Naughton picked up an 8-5 win over Tiago Gilioli and Juan Pablo Gomez at the three-spot.
The Cardinals also swept the singles points in straight sets. Slavko Radman defeated Shimizu 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1. Gustafsson picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win over Panzeri at the two-spot. Octavian Nicodim beat Zarco 6-3, 7-6 at No. 3, while Nicolas Houard downed Gilioli 6-4, 6-1 at the four seed. Clark shut out Gomez 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 and Teufel defeated Saab 6-1, 7-6 at No. 6.
"I feel good about this win," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Tennessee Tech is a dangerous team. Our players handled themselves with maturity which is a positive sign for a good team. We played without our No. 1 player, Damar Johnson, and still had the depth for a shutout. This should help our confidence in a long season."
In the match against Austin Peay, the Cards again swept doubles as Gustafsson and Clark posted an 8-4 win over Ankur Singla and Andrew Naidu at No. 1. Kennedy and Berrido defeated Brett Bolton and Patrick Puertolas 8-3 at No. 2. Teufel and Naughton completed the sweep at the three-spot with an 8-4 decision over Wesleigh Pancho and Nabil Lababedi.
In singles action, Radman downed Singla 6-2, 6-1 and Gustafsson defeated Naidu 6-3, 6-2 at Nos. 1 and 2. The Governors' Jon Brown posted a 7-5 win in the first set, but Louisville's Nicodim responded with a 6-0 decision in the second and clinched the point in the tiebreaker. Houard and Berrido registered 6-0, 6-0 wins at Nos. 4 and 5 and Clark defeated Puertolas 6-0, 6-1 at the six seed.
"Today was good all the way through singles and doubles," said U of L assistant coach Mark Beckham. "This is a good preparation for the Blue-Gray National Invitational this week. We will be competing in one of the tougher tournaments with several ranked teams and today's performances helped make us a stronger team."
The No. 40-ranked Cardinals (11-6) will travel to Montgomery, Ala., for the Blue-Gray National Invitational March 10-13.
