LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Taquan Dean scored 21 points and No. 4 Louisville overcame a lethargic first half to pull away from Chicago State 78-54 on Tuesday night at Freedom Hall.
David Padgett added 12 points and eight rebounds for Louisville (6-0), which plays at in-state rival No. 23 Kentucky on Saturday.
David Holston scored 17 points for the road-weary Cougars (1-6), who were playing their seventh straight road game to start the season.
Louisville coach Rick Pitino challenged his team to up its defensive intensity after the Cardinals allowed Akron to score 85 points last Saturday. The Cardinals responded by holding Chicago State to 36 percent shooting from the field.
Brandon Jenkins scored 14 points and Terrence Williams added 11 for Louisville, which breezed to an 18-4 lead and seemed to be on its way.
But the Cougars rallied behind the play of Holston and guard Royce Parran, even taking a brief 29-28 lead after two free throws by Parran.
Louisville managed to regain the lead at halftime but not without a scare. Forward Juan Palacios landed awkwardly while going for a rebound and clutched his right ankle with 3 minutes to go in the half, the same ankle he dislocated last summer.
Palacios recovered and started the second half but only played a couple of minutes before spending the rest of the game on the bench. He finished with four points and five rebounds.
