Lecia Brown, a 5-10 middle blocker from Wellington, Fla. has signed a national letter of intent to continue her volleyball career at the University of Louisville.
"Lecia is a phenomenal athlete, as a middle hitter with tremendous quickness and jumping ability," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "She is a great team player and will develop into a very, very good middle as she continues to add to her skill set."
Brown played for Suncoast High School where she helped lead her team to a conference championship, a district championship, a regional championship and the State Semi-Finals. She was named Second Team All-State by the Palm Beach Post and the Sun Sentinel. She was a Channel 12 Athlete of the Week.
"I chose the University of Louisville because I felt comfortable talking about my academic interests as well as my future in sports. Furthermore, they were interested in ensuring that my requirements were met, said Brown. "The coaching staff understood that becoming a doctor was the most important thing to me, and they showed me all the ways they would help me to make that happen. I loved the atmosphere, the school, the team, the coaches, and everything that was introduced to me on my trips. The philosophy of the coaches and everything they stood for went in line with mine."
Brown is an outstanding student at Suncoast where she is a National Merit Commended Scholar, a Science Pathfinder Nominee and belongs to the National Society of High School Scholars. She has already completed a National Institute of Health internship and received a Physician Scientist Training Program Scholarship. Her academic awards also include being a International Science Fair Finalist, State Science Fair Finalist and winning the Naval Science Award. Yale named her the Most Outstanding 11th grade exhibitor among other academic honors.
Brown is also an outstanding track athlete and is the defending Florida State Champion in the 400-meter, the 100-meter and the 4x400-meter relay team. She was the Regional champion in the 100-meter, 400-meter and 4x400-meter relay team and district, conference and county champs in those same events. She was named Track Athlete of the Week by the Sun-Sentinel.
