
Cardinals Defeat TCU 63-57 in Come From Behind Win

Louisville, Ky. - The Louisville Cardinals came back from a 15 point halftime deficit to defeat TCU 63-57 Friday evening in Freedom Hall. Sophomore Jazz Covington led all scorers with 22 points and 13 rebounds while Missy Taylor finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Sandora Irvin led the Horned Frogs with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
TCU jumped out to an 8-1 lead to start the game. The Cardinals cut the lead to 8-5 with a layup from Taylor, but TCU went on a 8-0 run to go up 16-5 with just over seven minutes remaining in the half. Jessica Huggins stopped the scoring drought with two free throws, cutting TCU's lead to nine. But TCU held the Cardinals in check, finishing the half with a 31-16 lead.
The Cardinals were held to their lowest point total of the season in a half, shooting just 17.2 percent from the field. TCU finished the half shooting 32.4 percent and outrebounding the Cardinals 30-20. Irvin led all scorers in the first half with 10 points.
Louisville started the second half in a full court press, sparking an 11-0 run to start the half. A layup by Covington at the 16:55 mark cut the lead to 31-27. TCU's Nikki Newton scored five straight points and Irvin scored her only points of the half to put TCU back up 38-27 with just over 14 minutes to play.
The Cards continued to press and Taylor scored a layup in transition to cut the lead to single digits again. TCU stayed in the game, pushing the lead to 42-31 with just over 12 minutes remaining. Then the Cardinals went on a 15-0 run, sparked by Covington's three point play to go up 46-42 at the 7:02 mark.
TCU cut the Cardinal lead to two with two free throws from Lorie Rayford-Butler at the 5:09 mark. Louisville then went on a 7-0 run capped by a three-pointer from Covington to go up 53-44 at the 3:49 mark. TCU cut the lead to four twice in the final minute but the Cardinals hit 6 of 8 from the free throw line to seal the win.
Louisville shot 48.4 percent from the field in the second half, finishing the game shooting 33.3 percent. The Cardinals' defense held TCU to just 21.6 percent from the field in the second half. The Horned Frogs finished the game shooting 26.8 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from behind the three-point line. TCU outrebounded the Cardinals 52-43.
Louisville will be back in action as they host Houston Sunday, Jan. 23 at 4:00 p.m. in Freedom Hall. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
