
Cards Win Nailbiter against Houston 50-49

Louisville, Ky. - Senior Angel Bradley hit the second of her two free throws with three seconds remaining to give the University of Louisville (13-5, 4-1) a 50-49 win over Houston (14-4, 5-1) Sunday afternoon in Freedom Hall. Bradley led all scorers with 16 points. Sophomore Jazz Covington finished the game with 12 points while Missy Taylor led the team with 10 rebounds. Sancho Lyttle led Houston with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
The first half was close with 10 lead changes and three ties. Houston's Jasmin Moore nailed a three-pointer to tie the game at 23 with 1:27 remaining in the half. Taylor hit a trey and Covington converted on a fastbreak layup to finish out the half on a 5-0 run, giving the Cardinals a 28-23 lead. Louisville finished the half shooting 40 percent from the field and 50 percent from the three-point line. Houston shot 31 percent from the field and just 25 percent from behind the arc.
The second half started the same as the first, Louisville kept the lead but the Cougars kept clawing back. Covington hit back-to-back jumpers to give the Cards a 40-30 lead with just over 13 minutes remaining in the game. Houston then went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 40-36 at the 8:03 mark. Katie Olson hit a jumper from the left side of the court and Covington stole the ball and converted on a layup to push the lead to 44-36 with 6:36 left to play.
Houston freshman Kadi Creel hit a three-pointer and Crystal Simpson hit two free throws to cut the lead to three with just under four minutes left in the game. Olson hit 1 of 2 from the line to give Louisville a 47-43 lead. Then Lyttle stole the ball and was fouled by Taylor. Lyttle hit both foul shots, cutting the Louisville lead to two. Olson hit another jumper from the left side, pushing the Cardinals' lead to 47-43.
Lyttle came up big again and hit a jumper in the lane to get the Cougars within two at the 1:51 mark. Olson's shot was blocked by Kiemona Harris and Lyttle was fouled on the rebound and converted two free throws, tying the score at 47 with 1:27 left to play. Olson hit another jumper on the left side with 56 seconds left to give the Cards a 49-47 lead.
Harris hit a jumper in the lane for the second tie of the half with 33 seconds remaining. Jessica Huggins' three-point attempt bounced off the rim and the Bradley, 5-6, skyed over Lyttle for the rebound. Harris fouled Bradley with three seconds remaining. Bradley hit the second of two foul shots to give the Cards a one point lead. Houston inbounded the ball to Lyttle right under the Cardinal basket, which caught her by surprise and time ran out on the Cougars.
Louisville finished the game shooting 34.5 percent from the field while Houston shot 34.7 percent. The Cardinals outrebounded Houston 38-33.
Louisville will be back in action as they travel to Memphis to take on the Tigers, Friday Jan. 28 at 8:00 p.m. The Cardinals will be back at home on Feb. 5 as the host No. 17 DePaul in Freedom Hall at 2:00 p.m.
