
Cardinals Defeat Lady Tigers, 75-68

With starters Missy Taylor and Joleen Phillips out of the lineup with injuries, the Louisville Cardinals were able to defeat Memphis 75-68 Friday evening in Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Sophomore standout Jazz Covington led all scorers with 19 points and eight rebounds. Four Cardinals tallied double figures with Angel Bradley and Jessica Huggins adding 13 and Connie Neal finished with 10. Jennifer Sullivan led Memphis with 17 points.
Memphis built a nine point lead (24-15) with nine minutes remaining in the first half. The Cardinals then went on an 8-0 run that was capped by Covington's first basket of the game at the 7:12 mark. Memphis shot an impressive 51.7 percent from the field to lead the Cardinals 36-33 at the half. Louisville finished the half shooting 42.9 percent.
The Cardinals started the second half on fire from the field, making their first five shots, tying the game at 45 at the 15:29 mark. The game was close until Memphis went on a 7-0 run to go up 54-47 with just 12 minutes remaining. Neal hit a three-pointer and Yuliya Tokova scored on a three-point play to cut the lead to 57-56 at the 9:10 mark.
Covington hit two free throws with 8:19 remaining for the first lead of the game at 57-56. At the 6:11 mark, Memphis' Jessica Hall finished a three-point play to cut the lead to 63-61 but the Cards used a 7-0 run to push the lead to 70-61 and never looked back.
Louisville finished the game shooting 44.9 percent from the field and 30.8 percent from the three-point line. The Cardinals finished the game shooting 77.1 percent from the free throw line. Memphis finished the game shooting 45.9 percent from the field and just 16.7 percent from behind the arc. Louisville outrebounded Memphis 35-31.
Louisville will be back in action as they travel to St. Louis, Mo. to take on the Billikens, Sunday Jan. 30 at 3:00 p.m. The Cardinals will be back at home on Feb. 5 as the host No. 17 DePaul in Freedom Hall at 2:00 p.m.
