
Lady Cardinals Victorious Over Saint Louis, 72-55

SAINT LOUIS-Jazz Covington led Louisville with 20 points and 12 rebounds as the Cardinals defeated Saint Louis 72-55 Sunday afternoon in Bauman-Eberhardt Center. Angel Bradley finished with a season-high 18 points and freshman Yuliya Tokova finished with a career-high 13 points, in just her second start in place of Missy Taylor. Marquita McFarland led Saint Louis with 24 points and 10 rebounds.
Louisville started the second half with a 6-0 run to tie the score at 29 at the 17:26 mark. Saint Louis pulled ahead by three but a layup by Tokova and a three-pointer by Covington tied the score again at 34. Saint Louis pulled away 37-34 with just over 15 minutes remaining but back-to-back layups by Tokova and Covington put the Cardinals up 42-39 at the 12:58 mark and never looked back.
The Cardinals finished the second half shooting an impressive 61.3 percent and finished the game shooting 48.3 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from the three-point line. The Billikens finished the game shooting 32.3 percent from the field and 20 percent from behind the three-point line. Louisville outrebounded Saint Louis 44-36.
The first half remained close until Saint Louis used a late 7-0 run to go up 29-20 at the 2:13 mark. Angel Bradley hot the first of a one and one to stop the run. Covington scored on a putback with three seconds remaining to cut the lead to 29-23 at the half.
The Cardinals had to play the last 16 minutes without Tokova, starting in place of the injured Missy Taylor. Louisville finished the half shooting 33.3 percent from the field and went 0 for 4 from the three-point line. Saint Louis finished the half shooting 30.3 percent from the field and 27.3 percent from behind the arc. Louisville finished the half outrebounding the Billikens 24-19.
Louisville will be back in action on Feb. 5 as the host No. 17 DePaul in Freedom Hall at 2:00 p.m.
