Freshman Svetlana Dukule had 12 kills and two blocks to lead the No. 15-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team to a 30-27, 30-25, 30-17 sweep of visiting Xavier in Cardinal Arena Saturday afternoon.
U of L improves to 9-2 while Xavier falls to 6-7 for the season.
U of L made up for 12 service errors by hitting .305 to Xavier's .068. The Cardinals, who have outblocked every opponent this year, continued the streak with 12.5 team blocks to XU's 7.0.
"Xavier played with a lot of emotion in the early going," said Leonid Yelin. "We were able to stay poised and not let them grab the momentum."
U of L ran off the final three unanswered points to win 30-27 in the first game. Xavier stayed closed the entire game, never allowing U of L to more than a three point lead and tying eight times. However, the Musketeers never led. U of L was paced by Lena Ustymenko's seven kills.
In the second game U of L used a 6-2 run to build a lead the held until the 30-25 Cardinal win. U of L hit .286 to XU's .135. Bing Sun's hitting heated up to the tune of six kills in the second set.
In the final set, U of L went on a 12-1 run in the third game to go up 18-7 and never looked back.
Xavier was led by Kate Duchek's 10 kills. Ustymenko ended up with 11 kills and two aces for U of L.
The Cardinals begin Conference USA play next weekend when they travel to DePaul and Marquette.
