MUNCIE, Ind. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team opened the 2004 fall season at the Ball State Invitational Sept. 17-19.
Senior Mark Kennedy advanced to the semifinals of the Flight `B'. He began his run by defeating R.K. Bacalla of Western Michigan 7-6 (3), 2-6, 10-7 in the first round. He then topped Toledo's Travis Curran 6-2, 6-2 and Marquette's Brett Binkley 6-4, 7-6 (5) to reach the semifinals where he fell to Alfredo Lagarda of Illinois State 6-4, 6-2.
Louisville freshman Pablo Camacho lost his first Flight `B' singles match to Bradley's Mark Muskievicz 7-6 (4), 6-2. He came back to reach the finals of the consolation bracket where he was beating Ball State's Brad Rhodes 4-3, before Rhodes retired due to injury. Camacho then picked up a 7-6(5), 6-4 win over James Wilson of Saint Louis and reached the finals when Toledo's Tony Tran defaulted. Wright State's Lance Koetter defeated Camacho 2-6, 3-6 in the championship match.
In Flight `A' singles, sophomore Stefan Naughton defeated Toledo's Josh Moran 6-3, 0-6, 10-4 and fell to Western Michigan's Brady Crosby 5-7, 6-2, 6-10 in the second round.
The doubles team of Kennedy and Naughton fell to Illinois State's Gillermo Gomez and Djordje Vskokovic 9-7 in the first round of Flight `A' doubles, dropping them to the consolation draw, where they lost to Butler's Andy Bartish and James Low 8-3.
Camacho teamed with Valparaiso's Dan Brunette in Flight `D' doubles. The team of Camacho and Brunette lost to Xavier's Brian Schubert and Adam Shaeffer 8-3 in the first round. After dropping into the consolation draw, they topped Cleveland State's Mike Durr and Alex Livingstone 8-2 and fell to Butler's Sam Brown and Chris Peric 8-2 in the semifinals.
"This was a really good tournament for Mark Kennedy. The semifinal in his division was his best career showing," said U of L men's tennis coach Rex Ecarma. "For Pablo Camacho making finals of the consolation draw is a great way to start off his U of L career. Stefan Naughton's second round showing was good, considering he lost in three sets to Western Michigan's projected No. 2 player. We walked away from the Ball State Invitational with some real positives."
The Cardinals will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., to compete in the All-American Championships Oct. 1-10.
