DAYTON, Ohio -- Bing Sun had 14 kills and three blocks to lead the No. 17-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team to a 30-15, 30-24, 30-18 sweep of host Wright State at the Raider Classic.
Louisville improves to 8-1 and WSU falls to 2-9. Sun earned Raider Challenge MVP honors with Lena Ustymenko and Ana Yartseva joining her on the All-Tournament team.
U of L used blocking and strong hitting to overpower the Raiders. The Cardinals hit .415 as a team and outblocked WSU 14-2.
"We were able to carry the momentum of the Morehead State win over into this match. We are hitting so well and our block frustrates the opponent hitters," said Leonid Yelin, U of L head coach.
In the first game, U of L eased out to a 6-1 lead and continued to build the margin including a 9-3 run down the stretch for the 30-15 win. U of L hit .438 as a team and outblocked WSU 3-0. Freshman Svetlana Dukule had six kills and hit .750 to lead the Cardinals.
Down 9-8 in the second game, Louisville used an 11-3 run to go up 19-11 and then built the lead to ten at 24-14 on two straight kills by Lena Ustymenko. Louisville had to call timeout to chill a five point run by WSU that cut the lead to 24-19. U of L battled to game point at 29-23 and forced a WSU timeout. A Jennifer Hoffman kill took the Cardinals into the break with a two-game lead. U of L's hitting hand stayed hot at .342 led by Ustymenko's seven second game kills. U of L continued the weekend's strong blocking with five in the second set. WSU hit .095 in the 30-24 loss for the Raiders.
The Cardinals surged to a 10-3 lead early in the third game. The Raiders were hampered by the loss of leading hitter Cara Ziegler who was injured at the 18-9 mark of the third game. The Cardinals cruised to a 30-18 win.
Lena Ustymenko added 12 kills and three blocks along with Svetlana Dukule's 10 to round out the Cardinal attack. Wright State was led by McKenzie Tiffin's seven kills.
