Charlotte Sends Marquette Home, South Florida Beats a Battered DePaul

Charlotte 4, Marquette 1 No. 7 Charlotte claimed a 4-1 victory over sixth-seeded Marquette in the consolation round of the Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship on Saturday at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The 49ers will now face USF on Sunday at Seneca Park (9 a.m.). Marquette finishes the tournament tied for seventh with DePaul.
Charlotte won the doubles point after the team of Laura Swain and Ashleigh Murray defeated Marquette's duo of Veronica Garcia Briseno and Callan Smith, 8-2.
The Golden Eagles rallied after Briseno swept Swain, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. However, Charlotte came back to sweep the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. Kathy Robey clinched the 4-1 victory for the 49ers when she outlasted Annabelle Espinosa, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 4.

USF clinched the doubles point after Marie France Lord Andrade and Gabriela Duch notched an 8-3 decision over DePaul's Marina Parashkevova and Gergana Ganeva at No. 1. The Blue Demons did not field a third flight doubles team due to injuries.
In singles action, Fabiana Taverna swept Natalie Matko, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2, while Patricia Kolendo defeated Brenda Leung, 6-0, 6-4. Luisa Obando also nabbed a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Stephanie Matko at No. 5.
