Inside the magazine, TV Guide takes a look at the tradition of "One Shining Moment," the song and music video that squeezes three weeks of basketball highlights into three minutes and makes grown men cry. So how did this one song become the anthem of college basketball? David Barrett, a journeyman folksinger, wrote it on a cocktail napkin in 20 minutes after sitting in a Michigan tavern one day in 1986, watching some Larry Bird game highlights on the bar's television. Eventually, the song made its way into the hands of CBS Sports creative director Doug Towey, who took an immediate liking to it and decided to use it as the music backdrop for a Final Four highlights tape. The "One Shining Moment" montage was an immediate success and became an annual commencement tribute. "It was a great idea that has become an institution," Towey tells TV Guide.
